In 1883, Mr. Siefried Bettmann created the company which would later be known as the maker of Triumph Motorcycles. Triumph has been in the business for quite some time, but its journey isn't without seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Triumph began distributing bicycles in 1889 and went on to develop motorcycles. They began to produce motorcycles by 1902, which were fitted with a Belgian-made engine. It then went on to produce motorcycles in Germany. However, the company mainly copied the fundamental designs of other companies and wasn’t really an innovator in their field.
The company had a break during the First World War. It was commissioned to supply a motorcycle dubbed as the trusty triumph to the Allies. There were 30,000 units of this roadster model that were supplied during this time of war.
During the 1920s, Triumph enjoyed a reputation as being one of the best motorcycle developers in the United Kingdom. During the post World War II era, the Triumph motorcycle has already infiltrated the United States market. One of the most popular motorcycles back then was the Thunderbird, which was intended for long-distance motorcycle driving.
The image of Triumph motorcycles was greatly enhanced because of the impact made by Marlon Brando when he used a Thunderbird in one of his movies, “The Wild One.”
During the latter part of the 1960s, Triumph gave some signs that it wouldn’t be able to keep up with the fast pace of the American motorcycle market. Before the 1970s, there was a time when Triumph had more than half of the American motorcycle market share, but because of its inability to keep up with the different technological advances that were being created by its competitors, it quickly went from the top to the bottom. It shifted its focus towards exporting its motorcycles which made it unprotected from the invasion being done by its competitors at home.
In 1983, Triumph closed. After 12 years of waiting, the company came back to the American motorcycle market in 1995. The hard struggle of Triumph seems to be paying off today.
Today, one of the most popular Triumph motorcycles is the Scrambler 900. It has captured a market share because of its functionality and sleek design. It is very suitable for commuting in the city and for doing important errands.
Triumph is indeed on the comeback and is continuously striving to make better motorcycles and hopes to stay in the game for a long time.
