Ever since it made its debut at the INTERMOT Bike Show in Cologne, the KTM 125 Duke has attracted a huge amount of interest wherever it has appeared. The thrill-seeking youth couldn't get enough of it at the recent Winter X-Games in Tignes, which just goes to show how popular KTM's first road-legal 125 already is with the younger generation of riders.
This is all good news for KTM, which is targeting entry-level riders with its latest model. To help boost the image of the 125 Duke as a fun bike for beginners, KTM has even hired stunt rider Rok Bagoros as part of the promotion team, and released promotional videos showing youngsters putting it through its paces.
In May or June 2011 the wait will finally be over, and this stylish, powerful, cutting-edge and massively fun bike will finally get to prove whether it justifies its status as one of the most talked about bikes of the year so far.
The Austrian manufacturer famous for its superb sports bikes has always focused on quality lightweight bikes combining the best components, powerful engines and excellent style, and the 125 Duke does not disappoint. KTM has been improving its on-road offerings ever since it launched the Super Duke back in 2004, and this is the road bike that beginners have been waiting for.
The new engine is reliable and powerful. KTM has a good history of single-cylinder engines, and this can be seen in the 4-stroke single-cylinder with liquid cooling in the 125 Duke. KTM's goal to produce an engine with clean emissions that gets some serious mileage seems to have been achieved, and although it's a 124.7 engine it has 15bhp and great progression.
The 125 Duke is great for everyday riding and the throttle response is excellent. But on top of that it also looks great. It's sleek, streamlined and customisable through KTM PowerParts so it can be adapted to the owner's personal style. Everything is in proportion and the finishes are great, making this a bike that is a joy to look at.
As you would expect from KTM, the 125 Duke comprises a number of high-quality components which are durable and easy to service, and the tubular chassis and WP suspension are excellent additions. It's also super light. The lightweight chassis makes it agile on the road, and at just 125 kg when fuelled it's not going to weigh anyone down.
Riding is a joy, and the excellent riding position enhances the feeling of control when out on the road. It's also easy to use, with a simple dashboard and gear indicator which is a useful feature for beginners.
For entry-level riders this is one cool bike. It is an ideal way for beginner riders to enjoy a Duke before they can get their hands on the more powerful machines, and there is no doubt that this is going to be the entry-level bike of choice this year - and perhaps for some time to come.
The Duke 125 is certain to be a hit in 2011. Duke wants to provide young riders with the same fun riding experience that its bigger bikes are famous for. It's exciting, it looks amazing, it's got excellent handling and great engine performance. Essentially, it's one of the best 125cc bikes ever made for the road, and if you can't wait to get your hands on it then just make sure you have full motorbike insurance in place to protect the best investment you'll be making this year.
